Models Of Colour

Just one look into magazines, runways, Internet searches and ingrained beliefs and you will find the rigid beauty standards which are still evident in today's seemingly advanced society. Growing up, (and even now) I would be in awe over the girls splayed out in magazines with their light, wavy hair and bright-coloured eyes. Repetitively, I would find Caucasian features being praised whilst my typical Asian features were shamed and put-down. Newsflash - comments such as "you're pretty for an Asian!!" do not, I repeat, do not, count as compliments. The difficult navigation of our teenage years do not need the extra burden of being embarrassed and ashamed of our culture and ethnicity which makes up so much of our identity.

White-washing is unmistakable in today's society with dark-skinned celebrities being edited with lighter skin, lighter and straighter hair and thinner bodies. L'Oreal have a crap history in which back in 2008 they were accused of whitening Beyonce's skin, in 2009 they were found guilty for racial discrimination for barring black, Arab and Asian women from selling its shampoo and now they are infamous for promoting their skin whitening products. Whether it be from lightening one's skin to wearing contacts to make one's iris' bigger or another colour to applying glue or tape to create double eyelids, European beauty standards have stilted the embrace of our own cultural beauty.

Lastly, the fashion industry - which is usually renowned for their progressive attitude (I think) - unfortunately does not do well in this field either. According to Vogue Anonymous, the statistics of models of colour which appeared from the Paris runways of Spring/Summer 2015 were less than impressive. Acne Studios, Alexander McQueen and Celine only used three models of colour; Alexis Mabille, Carven and Saint Laurent only used two models of colour; Haider Ackermann and Valentino only used one model of colour and Comme des Garcons and Jacquemus used a whooping zero models of colour!! But honestly, the lack of diversity is shocking...

But hey! This post's purpose is not to get you down in your dumps and cry about the injustices of this world - you have plenty of time for that later. I just want to share some of the beautiful models of colour which I absolutely adore. So scroll on down to appreciate some very striking and gorgeous humans. X

So there you have it! A little compilation of some beautiful human beings. The list truly goes on forever and I hope after this long post you too can relate to the unfair beauty standards of this world and embrace and equally love your fellow people of colour.

Anyway guys - I have wanted to write this post since I first started my blog and I'm happy that I finally got around to it. Racism is obviously still a major issue in today's world and as seen above, effects all aspects of our lives.

So that's all from me today,
lots of love and kisses,
Mags xx

P.S I am totally not intelligent or educated enough on this issue to talk very confidentally and many of these musings are just what have been on my heart - not particularly researched or accurate information!

Plants, Plants & More Plants

Plants are honestly so great! Look at them! They are so cute and colourful and come in all different sizes and shapes! If that isn't up your alley - well, c'mon, they give you oxygen to breathe and all, so they mustn't be all that bad.

So about a week ago my family and I went to the Botanical Gardens and played tourists in the late afternoon sun. It was a fun little day spent admiring the luscious plant life on offer and strolling through the vast gardens. I honestly love it there so much; not just because of the nature (duh), but the plethora of people there: from lovely couples to cute lil kids.

Below are some of the photos taken on the day which serve as a nice contrast to the bleary and cold weather we are having now. (I thought I could go a post without talking about the weather. I thought wrong.) X

Cactus' are prickly!!

This was a spontaneous blog post so I was just dressed in my good ol' Lee Cooper denim jacket and black ripped jeans - nothing too fancy. But there you have it: a simple post just showing you guys some nice leafy goodness.

Anyway, I'm super stoked to have finished exams and I've basically spent the last few days binge watching HIMYM and snacking on (more like annihilating) coconut chips. On the note of totally fun activities, I'm really excited for the NGV's school holiday program which is based around their current (and free!) exhibition Exquisite Threads.

It runs from the 1st to the 3rd of July and each day is filled with really cool workshops. There is a DIY vintage purse on the first day followed by creating your own embroidery hoop on the second day and ending with embroidering a peter pan collar on the last day! So if you're teen in Melbourne I suggest you come along to what promises to be a fun and fashion-filled few days - I'll also be popping by on a couple of the days so make sure you say hi! Bookings are essential and to find out more information and to buy tickets head over here.

So that's all from me today - I'm off to reorganise my room and devour a bowl of cookies 'n' cream icecream. Enjoy the rest of your night!

Sweater Weather

Winter has arrived here in Australia - and boy, has it arrived. Temperature's have dropped, tights have gone on, hands have turned purple and blankets are my new best friend. I for one plan on spending winter wrapped up inside watching HIMYM and consuming an impressive amount of hot chocolate, but on the slight chance I do venture outside, my neck is almost always covered. If blankets are my best friends, then scarves and turtlenecks are my soul mates. My winter wardrobe mainly consists of a whole lotta high neck tops and that suits me and my neck juuuuust fine. So now I present to you my collection of turtlenecks and skivvies. X

#1 CLASSIC GREY PULLOVER

Probably one of the most abused items in my 'drobe is this classic Country Road skivvy stolen from my mother. It's quite thin and light so it's great for layering and I love the grey colour - which will be making more of an appearance in my closet this winter. The high-neck wraps around my neck in the nicest way possible (is there a way that could've been worded nicely?) Anyway...

#2 LITTLE BROWN SKIVVY

I bought this lil' sweater from a Retrostar vintage sale for $5 a few years back and it hasn't been out that much. It's made of this cool, scratchy material and kinda reminds me of Scooby Doo for some reason... The neck barely qualifies for a turtleneck but it's close enough for me!

#3 VINTAGE & RIBBED & CREAM

Ahh, those three words make my inner fashionista's heart flutter. I found this vintage JayJay's beauty for $3 at my local op shop... can I get a hollar?? For the same price as a coffee, this sweater is so comfy and so cute. I love everything ribbed at the moment so this one ticks a lot of boxes.

#4 SLEEVELESS GREY KNIT

So my little sister came home with this from Temt the other day and I was utterly bewildered. Is it a singlet? Is it a sweater? In what weather can this be worn?! Regardless of the practicality of it, I think it's pretty cute and again, my inner grey lover is squealing with joy.

#5 GREEN GRL

Dark green is my favourite colour and it also makes up approximately 78% of my wardrobe. I bought this from Dotti a couple of years back and it is definitely a staple in my clothing attire. It's super stretchy and surprisingly quite warm and allows me to blend into foliage...

#6 CROPPED VELVET TOP

This velvet cutie from Hello Sweetie featured in my last blog post and is the warmest and coolest thing ever. I'm not one to usually wear cropped shirts (this is my belly button's first public appearance so make it feel welcome) but this is an exception. While wearing this, you may find me occasionally stroking my arm: Velvet. Is. So. Soft.

#7 CHUNKY INK SWEATER

And to finish this off is my latest purchase: this beautiful high-neck crop with an oversized silhouette from Sportsgirl. It is honestly the love of my life and is marvellously cosy and the colour is on point. It is most likely/probably made from the hair of angels and tears of unicorns.

And there you have it! A little peek at my (only) clothes for this winter. Before you go there are just a few other things I would like to share with you:

Embarrassingly enough I own basically no makeup except for a mascara wand which is questionably shaped in the shape of a parabola, but I got sent a few goodies from Elise Garland PR including this mineral powder foundation from Bloom Cosmetics which is so great for sensitive skin and left my skin feeling silky smooth without a shiny finish. Below are some photos of myself applying it in a most-likely incorrect way... But honestly I recommend it because it feels like silk and gives skin a natural glow.

Also pictured in this post is the beautiful minimalistic jewellery from The Peach Box. TPB are perfect for good quality, simple and elegant jewellery and I am utterly obsessed with my rose gold flutter ring and my twisted nail bangle

Lastly, but definitely not least is are my gorgeous Instagram prints from PocketPrintApps. I am an avid fan of wall art/postcards/photos as seen above and I've always wanted to be able to print my Instagram photos. And now voila, now I can - they come in all sorts of sizes and the colour on each is better than imagined. Printing out your pics is such a cool way to 'free' them from your phone and straight into your hands!

~

And there you have it, a rather long post if I say so myself! Sorry for the hiatus - I have had (and actually, still have) exams and my studio folio is also due in a few days! I've had a nice relaxing (ish) weekend so far; yesterday I went down to one of my favourite cafes by myself and attempted to write a literature essay whilst also munching on a berry and white chocolate muffin and drinking the best soy cap and then proceeded to watch 'How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days.' later that night. Today has been spent at work and procrastinating my methods homework - and alas! My excercise book has unfortunately run out and oh look, we have no more at home... how horrible *wink wink.* Anyway...

Hope you kiddos have been well yourself - and hey, if you have stuck out and read until here, I applaud you.

Until next time,
Maggie xx
