A Golden State of Mind

Welcome to the '70s. Today's episode is sponsored by warm tones and groovy tunes. And boy oh boy, we just can't get enough of it here. This post is basically an ode to all things yellow and orange so we encourage you to sit back, relax and enjoy the show.

Oh and please remember turn off your mobile phones.

Helllo friends,

It's been a red hot minute since I've last posted. Not too much to report - just been on a continuous cycle of (not enough) sleep, eat, uni, work, repeat. With a lot of procrastination thrown into the mix. Good news is that holidays are oh so soon and I cannot wait. So keep your chin up if you're still at school, you're almost at the finish line!

Today's post is definitely a spontaneous attempt for me to get out of writing this ridiculous uni essay I refuse to begin. So it is a mix of some photos of me taken by my sister from a while ago (over a month ago but shh) and some photos that I took of my friend Bianca for a uni assignment.

Spring has finally bloomed here and I'm stoked. T-shirts, skirts, dresses? You're all mine now. If we don't speak again soon, you best believe I'm livin' life up, soaking up the sun, the whole summer shebang. Hopefully that includes countless milkshakes, late night boogying and many, many memories.

Oh, I'm jealous of future Maggie.

Love always,
Magz xx

P.S This blog design is a SHAMBLES so once holidays hit - this baby is getting a bomb-ass makeover like the one Anne Hathaway got in Princess Diaries.

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

Here's a toast to all the sensational girls we have in our lives. The ones who are always up for a chat, up for a laugh or up to no good.

The other weekend I cajoled my two pals Hayley and Ella into a little photoshoot. Yep, I wanted to practice my photography skills but it was just mainly an excuse to hang out together. Among being playfully attacked by Ella's eight-year-old psycho black toy poodle Sooty, we got to chatting about everything and anything; from literature classics, to how girls are portrayed in books, to really good movies, to childhood memories.

Totally not a generalisation or anything, but girls are honestly the coolest. So take a moment to appreciate your gal pals. Find a Sunday arvo and get together to bake cookies, watch bad movies and to enjoy the company of friends.

Thanks for tuning into another cheesy post,
Magz xx

P.S You can find these two monkeys at their Instagrams:

School Yard Antics

Well, are you in for a treat today. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you a triple threat post featuring not one, not two, but three looks. Heck, technically there are six looks because there are two of us. #maths. Speaking of maths... these shoots share the common theme of school. Yep, we've dedicated this post to the six-hour-five-days-a-week institution we ironically finished last year. But with its influence making its way into our wardrobes, we ask ourselves if we actually ever left it...

On a more exciting note, the ever talented Rochelle has created the coolest look book video for these outfits, so sneak on over to the Youtube video if you wish.

Actually don't stop at her YouTube, check out all her snazzy social media bits and pieces; you won't regret it.

Without further ado, here is a little interview with Rochelle and a few cheeky photos from that day.

1. Hey hi hello! Introduce yourself to my lovely, lovely blog readers.

Hiya! I’m Rochelle, 18, just moved to Melbourne from Singapore but I was born in New Zealand and lived there for most of my life.

My burning question… Why are you called The Rochelle Fish?

When I moved to Singapore my new pals nicknamed me Fishy out of the blue. They explained that: rochelle = ro + shell = shellfish = fishy. Apparently this is a common train of thought because I met another girl named Michelle whose friends, completely separately, had also started calling her Fishy for the exact same reason! It became really confusing having two people in the same grade with the exact same nickname. (Later she moved to Denmark so I could claim the name for myself mwahahaha)

What are you passionate about?

Dance, drawing, make up, theatre and music all hold a special place in my heart. One of my life missions is to use the internets to be able to combine all my artistic passions into one career. I’m also super passionate about the environment, equality, tv shows and drag queens (don’t even get me started).

What does fashion mean to you?

Creativity and experimentation! I’m fresh out of wearing a hideous uniform 5/7 days so I’m in a very inspired place right now being in a new city, country and suddenly getting to play with what I wear everyday! (Also Melbourne has WAY more thrift stores than Singapore so I have a big funky pool to pluck goodies from)

Describe your perfect outfit.

Recently an oversized tee with boyshorts (or no shorts 😉) has been my definition of perfection! So comfy, so freeing. (I’ve been back amongst the equator for the month of July- this combo is not current-southern-hemisphere-weather-friendly.)

What’s something that people may not know about you?

I really really want pet rats. They’re so curious, loving, playful and intelligent and there are many that need new permanent homes to love them. There were two little sister rats here in Melbourne named Arya and Sansa (yes like Game of Thrones) and it took ALL my willpower to not adopt them! Like if you see me making a series of impulsive decisions, you now know why.

What’s something that makes you happy?

ANIMALS! Whether it’s a domestic kitty or a wild ant going about his day, I love watching critters be ignorantly blissful and do their thing, loving and eating each other, it’s all so beautiful.

What’s something more people should know about?

Probably a lot of things, but I guess I can narrow it down to ‘what goes on behind the scenes’. I’m still trying to educate myself on what goes into the stuff I buy, eat, wear and do (and will be in the ‘trying’ phase probably until I die!) but just know that you can take action towards living a more sustainable and conscientious lifestyle and still live a life full of fun and freedom and perhaps feel more fulfilled than before! At the end of the day all that matters is that you’re trying to learn more and act on what you’ve learned, even in little baby steps. Also Orphan Black is such an underrated show.

Give us a good piece of advice.

Drama class taught me that three of the most important things in life are self awareness, risk taking, and good public speaking skills. And watch RuPaul’s Drag Race, it will actually change your life.

School's Out!

Here's a flash back for you: remember those seemingly ubiquitous blue sky backdrops with faintly painted clouds? How they fooled no one that the school photos were actually taken in some old, sweaty gym hall? Or: everyone's neatly pressed hair, clipped back by accessories that HAD to fit with the harshly mandated school colours? (My condolences to the school whose colours were green and purple...) Or my favourite: the lifeless photographer who looked like they regretted every life decision they ever made which led them to this point?

And no, for the fifth time, I will not turn turn my body more towards the left, thank you very much.

Hi wonderful human beings,

Today's post is brought to you with a splash of old-school nostalgia and a big dollop of procrastination. Ah, my speciality.

A massive part of my style is this old, vintage look - what I, for some reason, deem as the 'English school girl look.' (No offence meant to English school kids.) Think button up shirts, cute a-line skirts, oxford brogues and a very autumnal colour palette featuring lots of warm colours. Yep, that's basically heaven to me.

I also absolutely adore these darling earrings from Made By Magdalena. My sister and I have quite a few pairs of earrings from them and love them to bits! They're all hand-made by one sweet lady so check out the Etsy store

Onto the segment of this series where I ramble about my not-so-interesting life: I am on a two month long mid-semester break from uni!! Sigh, I still have an essay to write and a couple of folios to hand it but at 11:55pm in five days, I shall be free. Get ready for some crazy, wild stories. Sleeping in until 10:30am, staying in pyjamas all day... I just can't be tamed.

Well, back to hitting the books for me. Wishing you guys a fantastic day ahead of ya!

Love always,
Mags xx
